Getting Out on Your First Charter

You’ve seen pictures and videos of people out on a yacht for a week and you want to do the same. So how do you do that? There are many options such as bareboat charter, flotilla or skippered charter. So you’ve chosen option 1 or option 2. That means. that if you want to holiday in the Mediterranean Sea and its surrounding countries, you’ll need a sailing licence. In the UK, an ICC is quite easy to get. With little instruction time and a practical exam, the ICC is within reach. To learn more, and be inherently safer on the water, most schools will recommend doing the RYA Day Skipper course (learn more about the curriculum here) which enables you to just apply for the ICC instead of doing two exams.

If you aren't near an RYA school

What if you aren’t in the UK or a place where the RYA has a bunch of schools? Well, most people will obtain certificates from them
their national boating or yachting association. Depending on the
country, sometimes it won’t be recognized and the port authorities won’t allow you to leave with the boat. It is one of the reasons I believe in the SLC from NauticEd. Basically, it has
the same recognition as the ICC but is more accessible. To me, it makes more sense. The more accessible it is to sit an exam, the easier it becomes for people to
get out on the water.

You Already Have Plenty Experience

“But I already have a boat and have been sailing for many years.” I hear you! In that case book the exam, on your own boat to save some money, and after some review, you should pass with flying colours! Psst, it’s a service I offer. 🤫

If you don’t already have your own boat, you can go through any school listed here or an RYA school near you and your licensing is done! Next step is to find a destination and then a charter company to make your dream a reality.

Don’t be shy to email me to discuss anything regarding sailing or how you can get out on the water here.
